Program Update – 2020-2021 Gears 5 Esports
With the 2020-2021 season officially kicking off this weekend, and today’s announcement of European and South American programming, we wanted to take this opportunity to acknowledge and address some of the program adjustments coming out of the first season of Gears 5 Esports.
UMG, North and Latin America
UMG will be responsible for overseeing the official Gears Esports program, which will operate solely in North and Latin America. We are very excited to be partnering with UMG, as they did an excellent job last season under unique and challenging circumstances, and we believe they have the right capabilities and expertise to ensure the upcoming season of Gears Esports is successful.
In addition to funding, The Coalition will continue to support the Gears Esports program by working with UMG to help define, evolve the program and uphold its competitive integrity, and with the competitive community to help inform game and program updates.
EGL, Europe and South America
We are also very excited to be partnering once more with EGL, who did an outstanding job overseeing last season’s Spring and Season Finals events, in addition to the European Pro League broadcasts. Going into the 2020-2021 season, EGL will be responsible for overseeing esports programming in both Europe and South America, which will consist of Weekly Online Tournaments for cash prizing leading into a larger event at the end of each Split. For more details on the EGL program please visit: egl.tv/open-series.
The European and South American regions are full of passionate and skilled players and we want to ensure these communities have the opportunity to compete in organized, structured competitions. We understand this is a smaller investment than before, however participation numbers simply weren’t high enough to sustain the depth of investment required to operate the full program in those regions.
We also acknowledge that the timing of this announcement was not ideal, and we appreciate everyone’s patience. We wish we could have been able to announce the details for this programming sooner, but this information was announced as soon as we were able to.
Escalation and 5v5
Escalation has been a mainstay of Gears Esports since Gears of War 4. UMG and The Coalition consulted with pro players and coaches on the overall program including modes and maps, and the feedback was largely in favor of continuing with Escalation as the Gears Esports mode and with 5v5 for the time being. That said, Gears Esports will continue to evaluate and adjust the program including modes as the game continues to evolve.
Thank you for your continued support, we’re excited to see what this next season of Gears Esports has in store.
